Event Description

2nd annual free movie at the Bonnyville and District Centennial Centre on Saturday January 24, 2009 at 2:00pm to celebrate Family Literacy Day. This also includes free popcorn and bottle water. The movie is called Penny’s Odyssey, a made-for TV, family drama about a teenage girl who hides, from her friends and family, the fact that she struggles with reading. The movie originally aired on and helped launch, the very first Family Literacy Day on January 27, 1999. The movie is 60 minutes in length.

Read Away Fines and Together Event

Event Description

Read Away Fines: Family Literacy Programs will be held on January 24, and customers are invited to read on their own to have their overdue charges waived.
Together Event: Grade 1 students and adult volunteers take turns reading to each other before having a guest reader read to the entire group. Carnival-like literacy activities and games, clowns and face painting will follow.

Event Description

The event will feature a folk story from Vietnam:  Toad is the Uncle of Heaven, told by a story-teller, performed as a theatrical production by grade two students from Balwin School, performed as a multi-lingual telling by LINC students.  Additionally, the Global Voices choir will perform several numbers.

Event Description

A 11 Year Old Event for our County!
The children, along with the parents come dressed in their PJ’s, carrying their Teddy Bears. We sing, do rhymes, hear new stories and then have homemade Teddy Bear cookies and milk.
The local newspaper reporter is invited and the librarians are always there, dressed up in their PJ’s. We have had Dads and Grandparents even on the coldest of nights.

Event Description

Different stations with different crafts and literacy games for the whole family to enjoy.  We have a children’s guitar group coming in to sing and play for us, then the instructor will have a station of her own to sing and read different songs with the families.  We will have a special guest read a story to the families.  Children are invited to wear their pajamas to the event and have their bedtime snack here.

Join the Medicine Hat Public Library and LEARN as we help Canada beat the Guinness World Record! In order to qualify for the record attempt, events must be held between noon Fri. Jan. 23 and noon Sat. Jan. 24, 2009.  The book for the 24 hour read-a-thon is Munschworks 2 by Robert Munsch.

Kids Club Storytime – In partnership with Parkland Mall, there will be a one hour storytime for parents and caregivers with pre-school children.  Free refreshments and prizes. 
Family Literacy Week Proclamation- To officially declare January 21-27 each year as Family Literacy Week in Red Deer.  It is expected this will be officially signed at City Hall by the Mayor on January 13.
Celebrity Storytimes – Local celebrities, including individuals from the media, Red Deer Rebels, Firefighters and the City have been invited to read stories at scheduled times during the entire week up to and including Family Literacy Day.
Get ‘Caught’ Reading – where families ‘caught’ reading at any scheduled storytime during this week will receive an entry form for tickets to the upcoming MAX and RUBY show.
