Centralized Document Production Northwestern Alberta/ Northeastern BC

Pilot Project - Background:

The Grande Prairie Public School District (GPPSD) has for several years operated a digital document reproduction service, providing centralized services to its schools and occasionally to colleague institutions in the region. This service is operated by Xerox Canada Ltd. (XCL) under contract with the GPPSD. The Grande Prairie community is the primary service center for northwestern Alberta and northeastern B.C.

In September, 2002, the Program Resources Branch (PRB) met with representatives of GPPSD and XCL to explore the concept of leveraging the combined infrastructure of the three organizations, to achieve greater efficiencies through joint service provision.

This pilot project was established as a result. It will allow us to explore the potential benefits of making a broader range of cost-effective document and multimedia production services more easily accessible. Target participants are publicly funded educational entities in northwestern Alberta and ultimately, in northeastern British Columbia.

By offering ready access to combined, convenient services, we anticipate that 'economies of scale' can be realized by regional jurisdictions and post-secondary institutions. This will provide a lower cost alternative to producing on-site much of the locally developed resource and supplementary materials typically required for use in the classroom.

At the same time, improvements to the quality of teacher and student materials will be enabled, as easier access to high quality production services and equipment is established under the pilot project.
