Scholarships and Bursaries
The Government of Alberta is committed to encouraging and rewarding the excellence of Alberta students. In 2009/2010, $78 million in scholarships and bursaries will be awarded to approximately 40,000 students.

What is a scholarship?
A scholarship is a monetary award based on academic merit or excellence in a specific area of study or discipline. Alberta students can apply for many different scholarships from a variety of sources: government, post-secondary institutions, private industry and service organizations.

What is a bursary?
A bursary is a monetary award available to assist students in the pursuit of their studies. Eligibility is usually based on clearly demonstrated financial need and/or satisfactory academic achievement. Bursaries are intended to supplement educational resources: government student loans, employment earnings, scholarships, externally administered bursaries and parental contributions.
Alberta Scholarship & Bursary Programs
Advanced Education and Technology administers scholarships and bursaries through the following three programs:

Achievement Scholarships
Established in the year 2000 by the Government of Alberta, the achievement scholarships recognize the excellence of Alberta students. The program includes the Jason Lang Scholarship, the Jimmie Condon Athletic Scholarship, the Graduate Student Scholarship and the Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT) Board Family of Scholarships.

AIT Board Family of Scholarships
Since 2002, joint contributions from industry members and the Government of Alberta have created scholarships for registered apprentices as well as those graduating from the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) or pre-apprenticeship programs. Over 200 Apprentice and Occupational Trainee Scholarships of $1,000 each are available every year. Additionally, 500 RAP Scholarships of $1,000 each are available annually to encourage Alberta high school students participating in RAP to continue their apprenticeship training after high school.

Alberta Heritage Scholarship Fund
Created by an initial $100 million endowment from the Alberta Heritage Savings Trust Fund, the Alberta Heritage Scholarship Fund stimulates the pursuit of excellence by rewarding outstanding achievement and by encouraging and assisting Albertans to achieve their fullest potential.

Needs-Based Bursaries
Advanced Education and Technology administers the Northern Alberta Development Council Bursary, Northern Student Supplement and the Alberta Opportunities Bursary.
