Funding and Supports to Learners
Advanced Education and Technology aims to provide accessible, affordable and high quality learning opportunities for everyone in Alberta. A wide range of financial assistance programs is offered to ensure that financial need is not a barrier to learners succeeding in their post-secondary pursuits.
Recent developments to support this goal include
- increased financial support for part-time students
- expanded eligibility for the Rutherford Scholarships
- programs to eliminate or reduce provincial student loan debt
- making degree programs available at public colleges
- limiting annual tuition increases to the increase in the cost of living, or the Alberta Consumer Price Index (approximately 4.1% for the 2009/2010 academic year)
Alberta's scholarships, grants, bursaries, and student loan remission programs provide an average of nearly $1,200 on a per student basis: the highest level in Canada. The Tuition Fee Regulation restricts tuition fee increases to the annual rate of inflation, and provides broader policy coverage with the inclusion of designated, non-credit programs.
