Roles and Mandates Policy Framework
New! Post-Secondary Learning Amendment Act, Spring 2009
Alberta’s post-secondary institutions have clear direction on their roles in providing Albertans with accessible, affordable and quality advanced education.
Amendments to the 2009 Post-Secondary Learning Amendment Act give Alberta’s post-secondary institutions within the Baccalaureate and Applied Studies sector (Grant MacEwan and Mount Royal) the opportunity to formally request that the Minister allow them to incorporate the term “university” in their name. This creates flexibility within the Post-Secondary Learning Act as it relates to a name but in no way changes the mandate or the role of the institution. The Baccalaureate and Applied Studies Institution category is part of the six-sector model in the Roles and Mandates Policy Framework.
This amendment does not allow institutions to move from one sector to another, but recognizes that Baccalaureate and Applied Studies Institutions are distinct as they offer baccalaureate programs as well as a variety of applied degrees, diplomas, certificates, transfer and open studies programs.
The second amendment ensures consistency and clarity around the governance of colleges offering degree programs.
The Post-Secondary Learning Amendment Act (Bill 4) was introduced in the 2009 Spring session of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta and gained Royal assent on May 26, 2009. It has now been consolidated into the Post-secondary Learning Act.
