Roles and Mandates Framework for Alberta’s Provincially Funded Research and Innovation System
In response to the Minister’s Mandate Letter from the Premier, the Minister of Advanced Education and Technology (AET) initiated a roles and mandates review of the provincially funded research and innovation system in June 2008.
The review process commenced with a multi-stakeholder consultation in July 2008, followed by a series of meetings between the Ministry and organizations operating within this system. The proposed Roles and Mandates Framework for Alberta’s Provincially Funded Research and Innovation System was presented to stakeholders at a second consultation in October 2008.
Why is AET Reviewing Roles and Mandates?
Over the last two years, stakeholders have told the Government of Alberta that the Province needs to better align and coordinate its provincially funded research and innovation resources to become more competitive and to better achieve desired outcomes.
Stakeholders recognize that innovation happens everywhere; it is demonstrated in basic to applied research through to the marketplace. Stakeholders agree there is a need for strong commitment to enable research and innovation. This culture has to be responsive, effective and efficient in helping ideas emerge and companies to grow.
Alberta has been successful over the last twenty-five years in building its capacity for innovation. It has made substantial investments in research and innovation, the development of specific technologies needed by a variety of knowledge-based industries and strategic activities in industry, all with the aim of diversifying the Alberta economy. This puts Alberta in an excellent position to achieve greater success through stronger alignment and coordination within the research and innovation system.
The implementation of this new Framework will take place during 2009.
