Energy Research and Technology

The Alberta Government’s commitment to energy research is more important today than ever before.  Research is needed to develop ways to recover the significant amount of conventional oil left behind, as well as less energy intensive methods to extract heavy oil and bitumen. Research is also necessary for the energy sector to reduce the impact of greenhouse gases and other emissions.

The Alberta Energy Research Institute (AERI) acts as the Alberta Government’s primary industry and research collaboration agency.  The organization funds both industry and academic research, and supports a range of energy development activities.  Visit the AERI website for all details and to learn about all the AERI programs, services, and linkages.

Through AERI, Alberta Advanced Education and Technology works with industry and other government departments including Alberta Energy, Alberta Environment and Alberta Sustainable Resource Development, to invest in technology and research to find innovative ways to extract and process energy resources. Government is committed to its partnership with industry in pursuing energy research opportunities and addressing the challenges.
